Kinnon R. MacKinnon, MSW, PhD

I am an interdisciplinary social scientist at York University's School of Social Work. I research transition-related medical care, how it is delivered within constrained care systems, and how it is experienced by gender-diverse people. As principal investigator of the DARE study, I am currently examining identity fluidity, detransition, and retransition among LGBTQ2S+ people. To communicate this research, I co-write The One Percent newsletter on Substack. I have also co-developed a website providing information, support, and myth-busting regarding detransition/retransition. This resource is Detrans Support.
I blend the theorical with the empirical, having been trained in public health sciences, social work, and gender studies. Prior to joining York University as an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work, I completed a PhD in Public Health Sciences and postdoctoral training at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto (U of T). I have also completed fellowships in Health & Society at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy (U of T) and in health professions education research at the Wilson Centre (Temerty Faculty of Medicine, U of T). I currently teach courses in the foundations of social science research, critical mental health, and the political economy of social work.
In 2022, I was named as a Research Leader by York University.
